David Maurer, 55, was arrested and charged with Felony Possession of Controlled Substances and Felony Theft by Unlawful Taking, according to the DA.

Maurer was responsible for emptying medication collection boxes located at the West Goshen Township Police Department and Chester County Hospital. The program allows residents to safely discard unwanted medications, the DA said.

While performing this duty on Nov. 20, 2024, Maurer allegedly removed several pill bottles containing controlled substances and kept them for personal use instead of delivering them to the disposal site.

Maurer was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Martin Goch and released on his own recognizance.

West Goshen Township released a statement acknowledging the charges and emphasizing its commitment to accountability and public trust. The Township confirmed that Maurer has been placed on administrative leave while the matter is investigated.

"The Township and its Police Department are stunned by the allegations, take this matter very seriously, and are committed to ensuring accountability and maintaining public trust," the statement read.

The Township added that it is fully cooperating with the Chester County Detectives and the District Attorney's Office. They declined to provide further comments, citing the ongoing investigation.

Authorities urge anyone with information about the case to contact Chester County Detectives at 610-344-6866.
